Marwood Metal Fabrication and Toyotetsu are holding a joint event this Wednesday. Both plants are looking to hire a mixture of press, robotic welder and machine operators and production control specialists. With the NUMMI plant recently closing, this surge in demand for skilled trades employees is most likely directly related.

The scheduled times are Sept. 1 from 3 to 7 p.m. and Wednesday Sept. 2 from 12 to 4 p.m. at 90 Samnah Cres. in Ingersoll. Interested applicants should bring resumes and three work references. Brant, Haldimand and Norfolk applicants can forward their resume to Brantford@srgstaffing.com or tillsonburg@srgstaffing.com

SIGGRAPH and 3dscan

3dscan

3dscan Among the courses at this year’s SIGGRAPH (an annual technical conference and showcase of the latest in computer graphics research) was an introduction to 3D scanning that covers all the bases: mathematical foundations, two different build-your-own hardware approaches, and how to process and render the resulting datasets. The presenters have assembled all the course materials on a top-notch web site featuring slide shows, complete source code, and an extensive round-up with links to both commercial and homebrew 3D scanning gear. The simplest of these methods requires nothing more than a webcam, halogen light source, and a stick! It’s nice an academic venue give a favorable nod to the DIY hacking community (on their links page). Okay, so Hack a Day isn’t called out by name, but just wait’ll next year!

Siemens Announces New CNC Controller

Posted in Uncategorized on August 25, 2009 by future man

Siemens announced the details of their new CNC controller today under the guise of their crack the Gcode saga. Jane Peterson is reporting on a “top secret” technology, which is actually Siemens new 828D. Their is an elaborate story line of the reporter, following a top secret lede while being chased down by “Relic CNC,” a company that wants to preserve the “old and outdated” CNC technology through some sort of conspiracy. It certainly is interesting and from what I have seen the  new controller lives up to the campaign.

“While being whisked away by security to a secure location, Jane’s informant tells all in this dramatic escape video footage. An even bigger surprise comes when the van door opens and they realize they are at Siemens.”

Free Cad and Cam Software

Posted in Uncategorized on August 18, 2009 by future man

In modern CNC systems, end-to-end component design is highly automated using CAD CAM programs. The programs produce a computer file that is interpreted to extract the commands needed to operate a particular machine, and then loaded into the CNC machines for production. Since any particular component might require the use of a number of different tools – drills, saws, etc. – modern machines often combine multiple tools into a single “cell”. In other cases, a number of different machines are used with an external controller and human or robotic operators that move the component from machine to machine. In either case the complex series of steps needed to produce any part is highly automated and produces a part that closely matches the original CAD design.
